PUBLIC EDUCATION EMERGENCYI
The most recent report on NC school test scores
Public Schools are failing to educate our children. The full report was in Sept 5th N&O. To sum up the report, only about half of NC Students read or do math at grade level! This is a 119 page report.Look at pages 14, 17, 21, 23; you will get an idea of how poorly our students are doing. Asian students seem to excell by every measure. Every other sub group? Not so much. Twenty years ago the rates were about 90% proficient! Here is a link to the N&O article, there is a link to the full report in the article:

What is the goal? 60% , 75%, 90% proficiency? Read this from page 60 of the report:
LONG-TERM GOALS
Note on Long-Term Goals
In the ESSA State Plan, North Carolina set rigorous goals for improved academic achievement. Goals:
• Percentage of students at Level 4 and above on reading and mathematics tests, by subgroup
• English Learners’ progress in attaining English Language Proficiency
• Four-Year Cohort Graduation Rate, by subgroup For the 2022–23 and the 2023–24 school years, the only state-level target met was the Asian subgroup for the Four-year Cohort Graduation Rate. Some schools met school-level targets for some subgroups.
I do not think the State Board of Education has a defined proficiency goal for our children!
I think the teachers in the classrooms are doing the best they can within the rules they must follow
PRE-K THROUGH 12th GRADE
I do not think the government public schools are properly educating our children. Regardless of how you feel about CRT, DEI, sex education in early grades, book banning, and all the other issues affecting the schools, we all want our children to be taught, and to LEARN the basics-reading, writing and arithmatic as we used to call it. School boards routinely ask for more money, for ongoing expenses and to remodel older facilities and build new schools. School boards and especially the teachers unions(don't be fooled, the NCAE IS a union and is affiliated with the larger, nationwide trachers unions, ask for more money so they can educate better. Bigger budgets do not always equal better outcomes. Charter schools ARE public schools. They receive public money from local taxes and while not required to teach the state approved cirrculum, their students must pass the same year-end tests as all other public school students. Students in Charters, in general, learn better than students in the government run schools. That is a fact. Click here to read an N&O article from Jan. 11, 2024. Twelve of the top 20 NC middle schools are in the Triangle. The best public middle school in the Triangle is a Charter school. The next eight are also Charter schools. The last 3 are traditional public schools and only 1 is in Wake county. ONE of the top 20 middle schools in NC is a WCPSS school! That is NOT acceptable. I will not support a state funding increase for public schools until overall test scores improve! There is too much bloat in school administrations; if we reduce admin staff we can increase teacher pay. We need to hold school boards responsible and demand, and then expect better educational outcomes. I am a strong proponent of charter schools. I do not believe the teachers unions always act on the behalf of our children. I am in favor of Vouchers for private schools, both secular and religious. Head start programs are generally not effective.
The ONE biggest determinate of better education outcomes is...................two parent households. PERIOD We should pass laws to encourage 2 parent families; it helps the kids and the adults.
HIGHER EDUCATION
Currently employed school teachers in NC should get free tuition to state colleges and universities to get schooling that would enhance their careers.
Either the Community College system or the UNC system should rescue Shaw and St Augs in Raleigh and maintain their HBCU legacy. What would state support do for those beleagured schools in the heart of Raleigh?
Sept 24- I just read an article in the WSJ about Arizona and their problems with, for lack of a better term, Educational Savings Account, similar to an HSA. Notwithstanding the problems in that state, it seems like a doable thing. Tax deductable savings Account for parents to spend on their children's education-tuituion, school supplies, books, tutoring, field trip fees, lunch money, athletics fees. I wish I had thought of that. Great Idea!
